13.7 km

Although the sign now indicates differently, cycling is legal here - also according to the website of the Goois Nature Reserve. The path is a nice unpaved alternative to the cycle path along the motorway, but it must also be shared with walkers and horse riders. So adjust speed.

Heathland descent with views over Zuiderheide

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

One of the many fantastic pieces of heathland around Hilversum. Not a lot of height difference, but you can feel it. Can be very busy with walkers, cyclists, runners and other outdoorsy people on sunny days.

Lovely compact gravel strip along the Laarderwasmeer. Twists finish it off!

Gravel Path Through the Forest

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Indeed a nice straight stretch of gravel cycle path. But very narrow and so be careful when "racing" because of any oncoming traffic. There is a wider forest road next to the cycle path. If you want to "race", use it and only if there are no hikers using the forest road.

Pijnenburg Swamp Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

For a long time, cycling was prohibited here, but since the path is part of the local MTB network, you can legally cycle on this unpaved path. A fantastic way to cycle to and from Lage Vuursche with a gravel bike or MTB, where previously you had to cycle on the sometimes busy motorway. Absolutely great!

Runway at Soesterberg Air Base

Highlight • Cycleway

Perhaps the widest cycle path in the Netherlands ... or the world? The runway of the old Soesterberg airbase is open to cyclists. The runway is closed between March 15 and August 15 and the birds fly and breed here. More info about this: utrechts Landschap.nl/natuurgebied/park-vliegasis-soesterberg/broedeason

Oude Woudenbergse Zandweg

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Wide unpaved gravel road with a narrow cycle path next to it. The bike path is partly asphalt and partly hardpack gravel. This connection is therefore perfectly suitable for all types of bicycles (including racing bicycles). With the gravel bike you can easily cycle on the wide unpaved road next to the cycle path.

A partly unpaved and legally cycleable connecting road between the Maarnse Grindweg and the Buurtsteeg. A perfect passage for gravel cyclists who find their way from the paved Maarnse Grindweg to the partly unpaved Buurtsteeg.

Let de Stigter Path

Highlight • Cycleway

The Let de Stigterpad winds through the forests, moors and sand drifts of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. The 39 km long and partly unpaved cycle path from Maarn to Rhenen is named after one of the founders of the national park, A.D. de Stigter-Huising.

Very nice place De Proloog, also in the middle of a ride, for an Engadine Nusstorte with a cappuccino. Inspiring, there are always other cyclists on the weekend. The meeting point for drivers in Amerongen.

Luitjesweg unpaved section

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Dirt road between farms. From Rhenen there is a prohibition sign for all traffic that has no business at one of these addresses.... from the other side, however, the road is free to enter. I suspect that people will have no problem with a sporadic gravel enthusiast on two wheels :-)

Dirt road through fields

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Nice little single track surrounded by fields on the slopes of the Grebbeberg hill. It's a nice one in a network of multiple dirt roads and grassy paths. Bumpy but beautiful. Great for mountainbikes and gravel bikes a like.

Tip by

17

87.4 km

Laarsenberg-East Cycling Path

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Great forest road + concrete cycling path up and over the Grebbeberg. It's a hidden climb that many don't know that is much more beautiful then the car invested Grebbeberg road that many ride. Go here instead ;-)

Tip by

Afweg Gravel Section

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Unpaved farm road - or backroad as Gijs Bruinsma would call it - in the polder estuary between the Utrechtse Heuvelrug and the Veluwe just behind Wageningen. A nice unpaved connecting road for those who want to cross this polder as unpaved as possible. Perfect for the gravel bike. To do on the road bike for those who have experience on gravel.

Grotelaan gravel path

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Gravellaan de Veluwe, which is forbidden for traffic, but not for cyclists :-)
At the end of the avenue, pay close attention to where you are cycling. Several pieces of Staatsbosbeheer forest are not accessible to cyclists here. However, there are many unpaved paths that are also legal for cycling. Just be careful near the stream, where cycling is prohibited due to the fragile nature.

Larixlaan, beautiful forest trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

When a forest path has a street name, you often already know enough, that's a nice one! The same applies to this Larixlaan in the forest near Nassau's Oord. There are several beautiful forest paths in this forest, but from south to north or vice versa, this is perhaps the most beautiful for gravel cyclists.

Bosbeekweg

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Beautiful road through the forest and also the only legal cycling route through the forest near Quandenoord. You can use the concrete cycle path here with your regular bicycle, but with your gravel bike or MTB you will enjoy cycling on the hard dirt road that is directly next to it.

Strade Bianche Lichtenbeek

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Beautiful hidden Strade Bianche hardpack gravel road. It's rolling, winding and beautiful. Good ridable for all types of bikes. It's a bit hidden (and only locally known) as it is in a forest that is mostly used by hikers and mountainbikers. You'll have to go through a little fence from the Dreijenseweg in the west or simply enter it from the Amsterdamseweg in the east (entrance via the villa).

Warnsborn gravel section

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Just outside the city of Arnhem, but already immediately in the middle of farmers fields and forests, this beautiful gravel road is definitely worth the visit. From the gravel crossroads in the south you can go in pretty much any direction.

Tip by

31

127 km

Schaapsdrift gravel section

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Beautiful singletrack through the heath at the Warnsborn estate. Beautiful to see, especially early in the morning or at the end of the afternoon. The path itself is easy to cycle with a gravel bike.
It is free to cycle on all trails here, but keep in mind that many hikers are not always aware of this. Then take the speed out and share the paths :-)

G50 Gravel Path (Veluwe)

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Not the A50... but the G50! The gravel-50 next to the highway, which incidentally does not bother you much. The G50 is a perfect connecting road for gravel bikers between Arnhem and the prelude to the Deelerwoud or the Veluwezoom. Although the trail has some loose spots, it is generally hardpack and great for cycling. Slightly sloping (like almost everything on the Veluwe).

Deelerwoud gravel stretch

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Beautiful and remote gravel road through heather fields just north of Deelen, connecting the 'Kop van Deelen' with either 'Woeste Hoeve' or 'Loenermark' gravel sections. Famous for it's dead trees by the side of the road. There's also highlander cows walking around here + of course a beautiful view overall.

Tip by

34

148 km

Loenermark Gravel Path

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

The 'Loenermark' is a beautiful place in the middle of the Veluwe. Less crowded then the 'Posbank' area and lucky enough there is tons of gravel and forest track to be ridden there.
This specific double-track gravel road is one of my favorites to ride and the highpoint in most of my rides. Beautifully located in the middle of the rolling heather fields, smooth ridable and lots of other great gravel roads nearby. A must see for all with a gravelbike, racer or mountainbike.

Tip by

35

150 km

Rolling gravel section through the heath

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Beautiful wide but winding and gently climbing gravel road through one of the larger heathlands of the Loenermark, with fantastic views along the way. The gravel is a bit loose here and there, but usually the path is fine for all bikes - including racing bikes. Halfway through, you can enjoy the view for an extra long time on the bench at the top of one of the slopes of the road.

Translated by Google •

Tip by

36

152 km

Strade Bianche Bruisbeek

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Beautiful rolling and winding hardpack gravel 'Strade Bianche' road running through the equally beautiful Loenermark forest area. This road has it all. Forest, heather fields, little ups and downs, places to rest and best of all... it's only one of many beautiful gravel roads in the Loenermark gravel network. The road is ridable for all bikes, including road racers (if you're capable enough to face some occasional loose gravel that is).
Most road racers will ride 'Droefakkers' asphalt road, but trust me... leave the asphalt behind and ride this amazing road!

Tip by

37

165 km

Ruggeweg Gravel Road

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Strade Bianche Ruggeweg is a beautiful gravel road through the slightly rolling fields just outside Beekbergen, on the edge of the Veluwe. The road is ridable for all bikes, but the gravel can be considered loose, so keep your eyes on the road when riding on a road racer.
Nice detail is the railroad crossing. You'll have to watch for trains yourself, but have no fear... This is no busy train track. It's only used by old steam trains departing from the nearby historic Beekbergen train station. If you're in luck you might bump into an old locomotive crossing.

Tip by

Lovely singletrack through pine forest

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

A wonderful natural single track through a piece of coniferous forest. Nothing technical, but wonderfully from any hustle and bustle in a beautiful piece of forest.

Translated by Google •

Tip by

39

177 km

Famous among locals, this high-lying trail along the edge of the forest in the east and the Hoog Buurlose heath in the west. The trail consists of a single track that often expands wider into a wider dirt road with loose parts. Still, the trail can be cycled well all the time and is never really technical despite the small height differences. The trail is perfect for cycling with gravel bikes and MTB. Keep in mind hikers who also like to use this trail :-)
Be nice, say hi.

186 km

Strade Bianche Pomphulweg

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Nice Strade Bianche gravel road through forest from Assel towards Radio Kootwijk. Nice alternative to the Asselseweg gravel road to the south, this one has less cars. There is some 'klinker' road in the middle part where you ride underneath the A1 highway.

Perfect for a break, as there are not many other options in the area for a break with refreshments.

One of those places that is always on top of my to go list. Great cycling on this forest track with amazing views over the big heather plain to the west. The tracks are hardpack and good ridable, soft sand at some point, but always some place to pass easily. Great for mountainbikes and gravel bikes.
Due to Kroondomein closure during hunting season, this segment is closed off to the public from September 15th until Christmas :(

Tip by

Amazingly beautiful forest climb or descent

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Get that bike and get straight out here... that is however if you're into great rolling forest roads and beautiful scenery. Ride this puppy south and you'll be flying! Ride it up to the Aardhuis area and you will have gotten your work cut out for you.

Great for all bikes. I'd even say a road racer would have a chance but the road gets more rough in the south, so beware!

Tip by

45

195 km

Aardhuis Gravel Path

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Beautiful hardpack gravel path, narrow and twisty but perfectly ridable. It connects up with the Aardhuis visitors center in the east and the Aardhuisweg in the north. Cross the road there and you'll ride onto the beautiful gravel road towards Uddel. Great ridable on all bikes including road racers.

Hofweg Gravel Section Kroondomein Veluwe

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

The Hofweg is one of the most beautiful 'real' gravel roads in the Netherlands and is easy to cycle on both a gravel bike and a racing bike. The open part of the heath is breathtakingly beautiful. The part in the forest rises slowly towards the Aardhuis / southeast and is therefore a nice challenge for those who want to cycle a little faster.

Please note that the Kroondomein closes between September 15 and Christmas, so all side roads of the Hofweg are closed. Fortunately, the Hofweg itself is open all year round :)

Ermelosche Heath

Highlight (Segment) • Natural

On the enchanting Ermelo heath you cycle through vast heathlands, forests and picturesque fens. This area of 343 hectares is an ideal place for cyclists and nature lovers. Here you can find a colorful collection of flora and fauna, including rare bird species such as the nightjar that have made their home here. The most beautiful time of the year is when the heather is in bloom. From mid-August to mid-September the area turns into a sea of pink flowers.

Beekhuizerweg - forest road

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Update 2025: free cycling is no longer allowed in the Leuvenum forests. However, this path is an exception and is still accessible for gravel bikes, for example :-)

A forest path with a street name... it has been there for a while. The Beekhuizerweg splits off from the Cyriassischepad on the south-east side, a cycle connection of broken concrete and gravel / hard forest path. However, this Beekhuizerweg continues straight in the bend towards the north-west, through the heart of the Leuvenum forest. A wonderfully light winding forest path that is perfect for cycling with a gravel bike, at least... in the summer it can also be sandy in places, but unfortunately that is a given nowadays on the dried-up Veluwe.

At various places along this highlight you can also join the MTB route of Harderwijk.

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

In Leuvenhorst you are now only allowed to cycle on specifically designated forest paths. This combination of forest paths along the impressive sand drift is one of those legal cycling routes. The path can be very sandy in the bend near the sand drift, especially in summer, but you won't have to leave your bike for long. Beautiful cycle route for gravel bikes and MTB.

Gravel Road Kroondomein - Hoge Duvel

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Hoge Duvel is a beautiful gravel road / 'Strade Bianche' running through the 'Kroondomein Het Loo' forest. At the intersection in the middle of Kroondomein in the south, there's the possibility of following the Hoge Duvel further towards Apeldoorn in the east, or turning further south towards Hoog Soeren.
Kroondomein het Loo form the official royal hunting grounds, making them a beautiful part of the Veluwe nature park, but also most paths are closed off to the public from mid september to Christmas for hunting season. This one is open all year though :) Be aware of this before planning your ride here. Otherwise, definitely ride this highlight as it is beautiful.

Strade Bianche Berkenlaan

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Beautiful unpaved gravel passage in the forest. Although from above it is actually more of a residential area (of villas), in practice you will not be bothered by it much. The path can sometimes be a bit rough for a racing bike, but will certainly be excellent for cycling with a gravel bike.

Update: nowadays there is a 'no entry for unauthorized persons' sign next to the 'private road' sign. In short, the forest residents do not want you to cycle here... so hospitable of them.

Nice - but short - technical singletrack, hidden as a narrow path between the trees.

Ennerveld – unpaved climb

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

A 'shortcut' in the mountain bike route that at the same time provides a fun challenge. That is what this climb (little climb) along the Ennerveld offers the cyclist.
The path is actually a soft/loose sand path, in which a hard worn single track has been created. This makes the path easy to cycle with MTB and gravel bikes.
This is also a nice option to cut downwards.

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

This super nice hardpack gravel path is located in the English Werk city park. Official cycle path and perfect to ride with all types of bicycles. The great alternative to the 'bicycle highway' that runs on the other side of the track towards the center of Zwolle.
Do take into account walkers (with dogs) of course if you choose this option.

Zwolle

Highlight • Settlement

Zwolle was once part of the Hanseatic League and when it joined this trade union, prosperity returned. That is why they wanted to protect themselves against invaders and built a star-shaped canal around the city center, which still dominates the cityscape today. But there is much more to see in Zwolle. The "Peperbus", the 75 meter high tower of the Church of Our Lady, catches the eye from afar. Various museums invite you to visit, just like the theater or the beautiful sculpture garden on the outskirts of the city. So it is worth planning some time for Zwolle. All kinds of hotels and restaurants will certainly help you to enjoy your stay.
