Hiking in Essen is a wonderful experience. This city, in the heart of the Ruhr region, boasts four top-class hiking trails, with a total length of over 120 kilometres (75 mi). No other German city has such superb hiking trails and they’re as varied and exciting as Essen itself.

The Baldeney loop, just under 27 kilometres (17 mi) in length, and the Kettwiger panoramic loop, 34 kilometres (21 mi) long, take you through the green south of Essen, past quaint farms, through forests and across meadows and fields. On the other hand, the 26-kilometre (16 mi) Zollverein loop in the north of the city, scores points with its impressive industrial heritage and fascinating views of slag heaps. It’s named after the Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site, the only World Heritage Site in the Ruhr region. This urban hiking paradise is completed by the Deilbach loop. Over 33 kilometres long (20 mi), it connects Essen, with the towns of Hattingen and Velbert, leading through beautiful landscapes and providing wonderful views.

So, lace up on your hiking boots and set off on these four glorious Essen hiking trails.
